Characterisation of oncology EHR-derived real-world data in the UK, Germany, and Japan

In oncology, electronic health records (EHR) play a pivotal role in generating real-world evidence (RWE) to guide clinical decisions and policy. However, challenges persist in ensuring the clinical depth,  consistency, and country-level comparability of such datasets, particularly for multinational studies including Europe and Asia.

Unlocking the power of real-world data across the globe: Recent research accomplishments from Flatiron Forum and multinational data

One of the most exciting developments from Flatiron FORUM is their work on the transportability of real-world evidence (RWE) between regions. Historically, HTA bodies have preferred local data to inform decisions about the value of new treatments. However, local data is often scarce and lacks clinical depth, especially in smaller markets or for rare diseases.

Case study: Early-onset cancer trends in Japan and the US

Real-world data (RWD) derived from electronic health records (EHR) is key to understanding emerging oncology trends, such as the current rise in incidence of early-onset gastric and colorectal cancer, and its utility and potential are well-documented. However, Japan has limited real-world data sources to conduct comprehensive pharmacoepidemiologic studies in oncology, despite interest from regulatory bodies like Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) and the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA).
